The Goldwork Cardinal is an advanced design. The cardinal is worked in gold metal threads on a cotton velveteen fabric. Areas of the design are padded with felt and crochet cotton and the metal embroidery threads sewn over top. The fabric comes with the design hand painted on so you do not have to worry about transferring the design yourself and all the threads in the kit are clearly labelled. In the kit I provide a detailed instruction booklet with 19 pages of step-by-step diagrams and instructions on each technique on the goldwork design. Techniques and Threads Worked on the Cardinal Design: Padding: Areas of the design are padded with felt and crochet cotton. Body: The body is worked in Japan thread in the technique of Or Nue – couching down the Japan thread with coloured threads. The Japan thread is synthetic so will not tarnish. The wing and feathers: Worked in rows of check thread or rococco and pearl purl. Face, beak, branch and leaves: Purl threads such as bright check purl, rough purl and smooth purl. Outlines: Pearl purl and twist. Berries: Satin stitch. Each of my goldwork designs have different metal thread techniques so doing one design doesn’t necessarily prepare you for another design. Each design is unique making for a new stitching experience each time. Metal threads tarnish as the metals are copper based and oxidize over time when exposed to light and the elements. Display the embroidery in a dark location with no direct natural or artificial light to slow down the rate of tarnishing.
